Tragedy in Hollywood

John Travolta and Kelly Preston's son Jett died on Friday in the Bahamas. (STORY)

We always think these celebrities are invincible but awful things happen to them sometimes. Saying nothing of his work as an actor, John Travolta and Kelly Preston have always been, in the public's eye at least, completely devoted to each other and their family. My heart goes out to them.

Voice of God Silenced

The "Voice of God" or "Thunderthroat" has passed away. Don La Fontaine, one of the most famous voice-over artists ever, died from complications due to pneumothorax, or "collapsed lung". Visit Don's site HERE.

Every true movie buff knows this man well, and most would recognise his voice from any of the 5, 000 movie trailers or 350, 000 commercials (true) he's voiced.

I was lucky enough to interview the man and you can listen to that bit of fun audio below. A real gentleman and talent.

I am truly saddened by his death and will always remember him and his golden set of pipes.

Movie Minute: It was a big weekend...

Whoah boy do I have a lot to tell you! I guess I've just got a lot of 'movie stuff' swilling around up there so I better regurgitate it!

I chatted to the editor of Empire Magazine last week about the new issue, which has an amazing horror feature. You get an inside peek at Will Smith's I Am Legend and there is an evaluation of all Stephen King's paper to cinema concoctions. Absolutely brilliant. Go buy it now!

No seriously man, the green pants...HAWT.

So I'll start with the DVD I rented. I've been wanting to see Invincible for a while but it seems as though every time I go to the video store, whoever I'm with is not so keen. I love sports movies and I really like Mark Wahlberg so I was intrigued to see how he'd do in one of those "based on a true story" Disney tales. It's about Vince Papali who was a nobody that took advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime chance and it panned out. (Don't they always???) Basically he was a decent guy who ended up living a dream. Nothing about this flick is extraordinary except the man the story was based on. Movies like this always make me feel great, and with Mark Wahlberg and the lovely Elizabeth Banks (Slither, Spider-Man) it was EVEN better than I expected. I shed a tear and felt all warm and fuzzy inside. Job well done again Mr. Disney! (3/5 Pigskin Stars)

"So, you're sure that chicks love beards, 'cause this thing is pretty itchy".

I also took in a double feature today with my fellow movie crazed friend Megan. I saw a few trailers that affected me, one to the point where I squeezed out a single tear. The first one was Rescue Dawn, another true story about a prisoner of war in Vietnam played by Christian Bale. It looked AH-mazing. There hasn't been a 'Nam flick for a while, and I always like those. The other one is Rendition with Reese Witherspoon which is about the US govt abducting a suspected terrorist and the special agent (played by Jake 'give me any part and I'll do it ...well' Gyllenhaal) who questions his own actions. When I read the synopsis for this I thought "Boooooooring" but the bit at the end of the trailer where Reese Witherspoon screams "Tell me where he is" or something like that, I basically got chills. Now we're up to the one which made me tear up...it's A Mighty Heart with Angelina Jolie. ANOTHER true story based on the love of one woman for her husband, a journalist who is captured by terrorists. These are all heavy hitting dramas, not my usual 'must see' films. I tend to avoid those heart wrenching ones because I know I'll be depressed for hours afterwards, especially during the 'true stories'. In these cases though, I cannot wait to be depressed!

I love watching double features, especially on the weekend during the day. USUALLY the cinema is empty, as was in the case of my second screening (The Brave One). However, the first film I saw, Death at a Funeral, was packed...with grey haired old ladies! I swear, it looked like Sacred Heart Home for the Elderly had a field trip day to the movies. I was really surprised! I must admit it was nice watching a racy comedy in a room full of oldies who chuckled everytime someone uttered the "F Word". It was like being a kid again.

Tudyk never got over the death of Wash.

Death at a Funeral stars lots of British people, a midget and a dead guy. It was directed by Frank Oz (yes, Yoda). The basic idea is that funerals are funny. It also examines the idea that we don't really know someone sometimes, until it's too late. This black comedy is being hailed by critics, but I actually found it a bit boring with recycled jokes and the annoying use of a midget (or little person...height impaired???) for chuckles. Not only is he a midget but a damn good actor who played an amazing character in the Station Agent. While it was clear they weren't making fun of little people, it was still annoying. I did enjoy Death at a Funeral but I've seen much better British films. I was expecting more. The best part was Alan Tudyk naked on a roof, off his rocker on acid. Yes, I watched this movie with little old ladies and little old men. Yeesh. (2.5/5 Little Stars)

Well you see, there was this one armed man and...

The second film I saw (after a much needed break which included a delicious salad and a Starbucks hot chocolate) was The Brave One starring Jodie Foster and (mama mia) Terrence Howard. Foster and the dude from Lost are a couple and they get bashed in NYC while out walking their dog. The losers end up killing the Lost dude and leaving Foster near death...oh and they steal the dog. Foster becomes a vigilante killer, offing bad guys left and right. Howard plays her friend who starts to suspect something is a little off. I couldn't help but cheering with each murderer, gangsta and pervert she blasted. The ending surprised me but it was realistic. The whole movie could have been based on a graphic novel and I was quite surprised it wasn't. It was like a more enjoyable 'A History of Violence'. I have to say it was my pick out of the two today and not once did I get the feeling she was some man-hater. (4/5 9mm Stars)

So it was a great weekend for watching movies. It pretty much always is.

NEWS: August 20, 2007

Hey movie fans! I just watched an insane trailer for the Halloween remake. I actually think it's gonna be great! Click HERE to view it!

It's directed by Rob Zombie who so far has directed two vanity projects, House of 1000 Corpses and the Devil's Rejects. Both received some cult status but only with a very select group of people.

I'm looking forward to seeing him take on a classic. From what I've seen of the rocker's work on it so far, I can say that the new Halloween doesn't look like it will suck. However, I'll wait until I actually see the film before full suckiness level is determined! The film should be released in Australia at the end of this month. SHOULD, but probably won't.

Speaking of vanity projects, the mother of all vp's is due to hit DVD shelves in no time. According to yahoo movie news, Anthony Hopkins' film which he wrote, directed, stars in and composed the music for is called "Slipstream"...perhaps he should have just called it "SLIP" or "OOPS". Don't get me wrong, I totally dig Sir Anthony but, like Tom Cruise, he's lost touch of reality. [*ed. note: Yes I know it worked for Zach Braff, very well, but he's young and has an innocent optimism. Hopkins just looks sad!!!]

"Come on! Is this the face of a crazy person"?!

So now that I've mentioned the Cruiser, perhaps I should throw this little tidbit in. Tom Cruise's new film "Valkyrie" continues to be plagued by evil forces. 11 members of the crew were injured, one seriously, according to darkhorizons.com. Find out how by clicking the link. I personally believe it's a coverup story for what really happened. That is, they were run-over because they weren't Scientologists and one of them dared to curse the name Ron L. Hubbard!

Ahhh welcome to the movie news, where HP is king, Sickos wander the streets and Jared Leto returns to cinema (hopefully forgetting about a music career forever). This and more you'll find below. Venture if you dare! (Now with loads of links!)

Potter, did you brush your teeth?

1. Harry Potter has taken s--t loads at the box office. Big surprise there! Little Radcliffe has signed on to make 2 more for a measley 50 mil. The latest flick is being touted as the best, with some critics giving limp reviews. You might say, they're most likely limp in other areas, but you wouldn't because that's just rude!

2. Everyone loves a Sicko! The new doco about America's appalling healthcare system, unleashed a fued to end all fueds between the film's Director Michael Moore and television news network, CNN. Moore has called a truce, for now anyway, with the original fact dancers themselves. I just want to watch movies!

3. Speaking of Sicko, Jared Leto is a "Nobody". That was the line used on darkhorizons.com and I nearly spat out my food when I read it. Haven't I been saying that ever since he left to perform in a band, of which the name is unknown to most? Anywho, those who remember his sullen performance on that TV show with Claire Danes (don't yell at me, did it even make it to season 2) and his surprisingly well done scenes in the craptastic Alexander, will welcome his return. Ok so he's been in a couple of movies since Alexander. His new movie is about...ahh who cares. He's a douche now!

4. Steven Segal, yes you read that right, is not starring in anything but DVD's. I'm just mentioning him because he's suing his lawyers. Ahhh celebrities who dun read good. Is he acting out because he can't act???


5. To review Sunshine or not to review Sunshine? This movie came out AGES ago in Australia but is out now in America. Can I be bothered? Not really. Is that because it was a piece of crap? Not really. It was aight.

Cancelled? What do you mean cancelled?

6. Possibly the most exciting news of my day is when I read Mulder and Scully might be picking up the flash lights/torches again for a feature length X FILES!!!! This almost made me forget that Steven Segal exists! Almost. According to aintitcool.com, the truth is out there and it came straight from David Duchovny's mouth!

Finally, from aintitcool.com again, JJ Abrams Cloverfield project is a monster movie. Argh. James Bond is also returning to England and the day of days approaches, Arnie's birthday. Every year I celebrate with beers, stogies and copious amounts of Arn. Keep your metal eyes peeled for more news on that!

NEWS: Bites

I've been net-trotting (kind of like globe-trotting but heaps sadder) and have made it my duty to pass on the knowledge I have gained.

1. I love Ricky Gervais, but somehow him starring in a buddy cop movie with Chris Rock really doesn't appeal to me. Your thoughts, opinions? Frankly I'd rather see Hugh Grant in Lord of the Rings.

2. WARNING, GRATUITOUS SELF PROMOTION: This Thursday I'll be interviewing the director of the St.Kilda Film Festival and young Harry Potter fans for their verdict on the new film. Tune in to your local Aussie radio and you might just hear what I have to say!

Do you think anyone will notice if I just pee right here?

3. Speaking of Harry Potter, the new film is getting the "enough already" thumbs sideways after the latest offering from the JK Rowling golden pot. I'll make my own mind up tomorrow night when I see the film, but knowing me I won't care and will love it anyway! (I'm great at ingoring faults). It's both wrong and scary that I now have the hots for Daniel Radcliffe.

If I sit here and grin long enough,maybe Travolta will leave me alone!

4. I finally saw a trailer for Hairspray and it doesn't look too bad. It looks like a mix between Grease and Dirty Dancing. It's based on a famous musical too (which was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name), which doesn't often bode well for the film, but Dreamgirls worked so maybe this will. Despite John Travolta looking ridiculous in drag AND a fat suit, the adorable newcomer Nikki Blonsky (what a name) looks set to overcome the stain that is Travolta. Expect it to hit Aussie cinema early September.

5. America is finally getting Sunshine. This came out in Australia months ago. I'm at a loss. It was very 2001 and a little bit Event Horizon. I liked it, even though the pace was at times a little annoying and the last half an hour was a totally different movie.

Sally was so glad the diet had ended.

6. Finally, another of my favourite subjects...the DEAD. George A. Romero, who started it all (the Zed word that is), is very excited about his latest offering, Diary of the Dead. Who isn't??? I've always been up for a good zombie-fest and Romero does it best. One of my favourite all time movies is Dawn of the Dead (1978). The release date is touted as this year but i'm not so sure we'll be seeing it til '08. Anyway keep your rotten flesh peeled for more news!

NEWS: J.J. Abrams...genius or bastard?

Ok, so living in Australia, land of 'we better not show them things', we missed out on the trailer for "Untitled JJ Abrams Project" which was show before Transformers in the USofA.

A friend of mine told me about it. My reaction was, what the hell are you talking about? I am a big fan of all things JJ and reckon that Mission Impossible III was the better one of the lot, though the Alias influence was almost too obvious.



So what did I do? I Toobled it (YOUTUBE.COM) of course and found a shoddy vid off what appears to be someone's cell/mobile phone. Not exactly optimal viewing but who cares...


Two thoughts sprang to mind.


1. This movie looks awesome!

2. What the hell? Damn you JJ, damn you to Hades!!!!!!!!!

I have now become obsessed with finding out if this is Godzilla (apparently Paramount doesn't own the rights to it), an alien movie (wasn't that a ship that blurrily crashed at the end?) or some weird Lost style creature (the sounds, those terrible sounds).

Thoughts, comments, questions? Let me know! I'm on the case though and will post tidbits as I come to them.
