To critique a critic

Get out! Women can act too?

As some of you know, I'm a big fan of the New York Times movie page. It makes me feel smart and cultured when I read it. (I apologise for your IQ bottoming out after reading my own humble blog)

I stumbled upon THIS article by Manohla Dargis. It's about the lack of female leads in this summer's Blockbuster season. The rant comes off a bit ultra-feminist and she loses her way a couple of times but she does make some points.

I hadn't even thought about it to tell you the truth, but all my heroes this summer are dudes. I don't really mind, and most actresses are probably after roles with a bit more substance, yet it would be pretty sweet to have Wonder Woman this summer alongside Batman, The Hulk, Indiana Jones and Iron Man.

I guess I've always been a tomboy at heart, but the grown up lady in me is just a tad upset at the lack of big-screen women in big budget leads this year.

Don't worry, I'll get over it.

I think Dargis is completely correct. The lack of leading ladies in blockbusters and movies in general is another indication that women, despite the progress society has made in the last 30 or 40 years, are not perceived as being entirely equal to men. Even if it is subconscious.

Yeah but sadly she comes off a bit like a woman on a feminist rant rather than a person trying to come up with an educated argument. I think it would be really fun to see more women in action movies. Let's face it, a majority of blockbusters are action...I think the studios were just put off by a few major disappointments with female leads (sadly).
