It's that time of year. Christmas...ho ho hum. I'm in the middle of baking cookies. We've just lost a family member to a battle with cancer and I really don't know what else to do with myself!
Blogging and baking...seemed like a good idea at the time...a good distraction at the very least.
I missed out on doing a blog about Xmas movies but read my last one from 2007...it's pretty much the same. I have to add Elf to my honorable mentions this year. It's been 6 years since it came out and I still think about it every year. Zoey D is just the bees. I was also reminded of All I Want for Christmas (1991) with a little innocent Thora Birch. There is a great duet of "Baby it's Cold Outside" in the film and would you believe it? I can't find it on Youtube!
Finally I just wanted to jot down some of the films I saw that were more remarkable from this year. Unfortunately after reading The Village Voice critic's poll of the best films of 2009 I realised there are a heck of a lot of movies I haven't seen yet, a painful realisation. I also realise we still have a few releases left this year, not the least of which is Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones.
My fave films of 2009 were: Avatar, Up, District 9, The Hangover, Ponyo, Zombieland, 500 Days of Summer (Zoe again!), Star Trek and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. Biggest let downs had to be Julie & Julia, Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince and Departures. They all had so much potential but did not live up to it. Movies I should have seen include The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Knowing, Precious, Up in the Air (not out in Australia yet), Funny People, A Serious Man, "9", Where the Wild Things Are, The Fantastic Mr Fox (also not out yet), Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, New Orleans (again, not here yet), Coraline, Trucker, Moon (where are all these movies *frustration*), Drag Me to Hell...about a zillion others.
If there are any movies I didn't mention here that you feel I should check out, please let me know in the comments.
Here's to 2010. Let it not be as soul suckingly dismal as 2009. Hey, at least we had a schmorgasboard of great films to choose from this year. Hope you all have a wonderful and safe holiday season whoever you are, wherever you're from. Make sure you tell your loved ones how you feel and don't waste another second.

Sorry to hear about your family member Jen, that's really awful.

PS Merry Christmas!
Thanks for your thoughts guys. It's been tough. Movies have been a wonderful escape. Now trying to figure out what boxing day release to see. Sherlock Holmes or The Lovely Bones!
